Maybe you've asked a friend who recently built. Maybe you've talked to a builder, or googled it late at night, or looked at Zillow and tried to do some rough math. And if you're like most people, you've come away more confused than when you started.

You're not alone. And it's not your fault.

The truth is, figuring out what it costs to build a custom home is genuinely difficult. Not because the information is secret, but because the way people talk about cost in this industry is inconsistent, and nobody takes the time to explain the basics before throwing numbers around. People casually say "cost per square foot" (or sometimes even "cost per foot," which isn't really a thing) as if it's a simple, universal metric. It isn't.

So let's slow down and start from the beginning. Before we can talk about how much your home might cost, we need to make sure we're speaking the same language.
